The Beauty of Porcelain // Lam Lighting

When it comes to finishing a space then lighting becomes the star of the show, finding the perfect piece to lift the room, subtly bringing a calmness and softness to your space.  I’ve struggled for a while now to find the perfect fitting for my hall and landing which is small, quite dark and deep but now I don’t have to look any further as I have found exactly what I’ve been looking for when I was introduced to Lam Lighting.

Lam Lighting launched their online collection at the beginning of this year with style, showcasing a beautiful collection of incredible organic porcelain lights.  Based in the country village of West Bergholt in the East of England all the lights are handcrafted locally using traditional skills.  The collection has integrity, not only beautiful but timeless with sustainability at the heart of every piece made which embodies their mindful approach.  Being able to have a light in your home that is not only a thing of beauty but to know it’s ethical provenance is most satisfying, especially when having a slow and ethical lifestyle is key to your wellbeing.

Designer David Lam has developed and shaped some of the countries leading light companies over the last 20 years.  After all this time and experience David wanted to do things a little differently by bringing eco and ethical considerations to the fore, designing something that is not only unique and sustainable but beautiful too.  His wife Julie Lam is a master craftsman, she has been a licentiate member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen founded by William Morris.  Her medium has been porcelain ever since graduating in 2001 with her BA (Hons), over the last two years she has concentrated all her skills and know-how into Lam Lighting. She is a true advocate of keeping traditional skills alive, especially in pottery.  The third member of the team is image maker and photographer Hannah Thompson, after six years of working with lighting she brings her design acumen along with a passion she shares for slow design, with a personal philosophy for purpose and change through mindful choices.

With this highly skilled and knowledgeable team behind Lam Lighting you can see why I was so drawn to them, the simplicity of the designs and the eco values at the heart of the brand made me want to know more and of course own a piece for my home.  Every individual piece is hand crafted, each piece is uniquely different from the next.  Nothing is uniform which to me makes it even more special, having small individual quirks made from natural materials by hand not machine.

Lam Lighting porcelain is pure and organic, no glazes or toxins are applied, it is one of the most natural materials you can use in your home, it will never rust of tarnish but keep its beautiful luminance for a lifetime.   This being one of the reasons I was drawn to the Bronte pendant, the simplicity of the domed elegant design but the soft glow when lit illuminating my space to perfection.  All the lights come with a choice of fixtures and fittings and vintage cable which can be adjusted to fit any space, they also come with a matching porcelain ceiling rose which finishes the overall look to perfection.   Of course only the best energy efficient eco bulbs have been selected to compliment the lights with a lovely selection to choose from.

Whether you want to group a row of industrial chic simple pendants such as the Delphinium over a kitchen table to make a statement, or have one single pendant like the Buttercup design hung low over a bed there is definitely a design for you.  These elegant timeless lights are simple perfection and would enhance any thoughtful natural home with great grace and aplomb.
