January Rituals

Here we are again right at the beginning of another year stretched out in front of us.  It can sometimes feel overwhelming can’t it.  Over the years I have learned to listen to my body and my own mind, not get caught up in the hullabaloo of social media, what’s good for some certainly isn’t good for me.  I do try to take a step back from all of it in these first few weeks of January, life is hard enough in the depths of Winter at the best of times without the added pressure of being perfect.

I tend to take each day as it comes, if inspiration strikes then I’m there waiting to jot down the ideas as they come but don’t worry so much if they don’t, trying too hard never really works.

I’m still getting used to Ruby not being here, the first time in 18 years she hasn’t been with me on my birthday which was odd, turning 50 this week also brought with it a little apprehension, not quite sure I like the number but taking the time to embrace and see it as a blessing.

Winter months for me are for hibernation, being a home bird it’s rather nice pottering at home, making cosy corners for rest.  Eating wholesome meals by candle light, snuggling under blankets, making marmalade, soaking in salt rich baths until your fingers get all pruney.  Making the most of brighter days to get outside in the Winter sun, I love visiting the sea, it has such a magical quality at this time of year.  Watching the bulbs start to pop their heads above the soil bringing with it a moment of contemplation of warmer days ahead and all the joy that Spring holds.

For now I shall make another pot of tea, curl up with a book and gently remind myself that this is totally ok, tomorrow is another day.
