Nomad at Home
I was very excited when I found that Hilary Robertston was writing another book, The Stuff of Life and Monochrome Home are firm favourites that I go back to time and time again, clarifying that the interiors in these books are ones that I try to emulate in my own home and will be constantly learning from them. Hilary is a well known interior stylist, designer and writer that I admire greatly with a fabulous list of clients such as Anthropologie, Leanne Ford, Elle Decoration to name but a few. The majority of the stunning images in this book were taken by Mike Karlsson Lundgren, his work well known for it’s ethereal feel, with muted colours and room for blank space. The kind of images that make me stop in my tracks.
When Nomad at Home arrived I stopped what I was doing made a pot of tea and immersed myself in the rich, atmospheric lushness of the homes featured and the fascinating stories of the design led wanderers who have moved away from home to create a new life elsewhere Hilary being one of them. The book is broken up into two major parts, The Wanderers featuring the exceptional homes of the owners who have embraced the nomadic ethics, and the beginning part of the book which focuses on the materials, the colours and textures, elements and sense of place that have been inspired by travel and the serial wanderer.
It’s wonderful to dream, I’m forever imagining myself in far flung places, especially when on holiday. Pretending that the place I’m in is where I live full time, picking out houses that I could see myself residing in. I always bring something home to fit amongst my things seamlessly that hold memories but also making my home unique. Nomad at Home gives you the same sense of imagining that you live in one of the far flung places featured but also gives you the resources to be able to create a similar look even if you’ve never visited these places youself.
The Nomadic style features texture in abundance, tadelakt walls and floors, rustic wood, linens, wool, Moorish elements, Morrocan rugs and tactile tiles, splashes of colour but more muted tones that sooth the soul.
This is such a beautiful book, one that I will pour over for many years to come adding elements that are between the pages to my own home. Maybe one day I will become like one of the wanderers featured and take that leap to create my home in a favourite place travelled, you never know.
