Seasonal Self Care at Home // State of Liberty

I find the beginning of the year to be one of reflection, nurture, using the time to look after yourself, your body and mind whilst the daylight is scarce and the weather a little cold and bleak.

I have been lucky enough to get to know Lizzie Jones from State of Liberty, who runs her company with our well being firmly at the fore.  State of Liberty retreats are designed so that you can enjoy a retreat experience in the comfort of your own home, how wonderful is that.  The retreats are inspired by nature and aligned with the seasons, each season supports, nourishes and prepares the body for the next season creating a constant cycle of well being.  All very clear and simple, and something we all forget about in our face paced lives that we have chosen to live and consume.  If we stop and take the time to think and compartmentalise we can often see the simpler picture.

Based on the the five seasons used in traditional Chinese medicine, each season correlates to one of the five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal and water.  Influenced by these  five elements, Lizzie has created a retreat, a pamper box and an essential oil blend for each season.

The Seasonal Pamper Box compliments the online retreat content and has been designed specifically to deliver an overwhelming sense of calm directly to your door.  Every purchase you make comes with access to exclusive online content that is there to help you effortlessly incorporate State of Liberty products into you self care routine with ease.

I can honestly say that the Winter Pamper Box is one of the most wonderful gifts I have ever received.  The older I get the more aware I am of looking after myself so I am pretty good at early nights, sleeping well, reducing my screen time and cooking nourishing home made food.  I also swim regularly and walk as much as I can.  One of the nicest things to my routine is bathing and looking after my skin.  So the Winter Pamper Box is perfect for me, I have thoroughly enjoyed the process of making my own simple face mask, lighting the candle and having a hot soak in an epsom salt bath, being intoxicated by the wonderful aroma of the winter blend essential oil of Frankincense, Patchouli and Pettigrain.

To me it’s dedicating the time, going through the ritual of preparing that face mask or bath, switching off from the world and creating your own retreat that is just for you.  Emptying your thoughts concentrating on your breathing and giving yourself over to the sheer bliss of being relaxed and calm.  All of which we are capable of doing if we choose to notice and make an effort to do so.

What is also so delicious about State of Liberty is their attention to detail, the boxes are beautifully designed and crafted with care, all packaging used is eco friendly all bespoke and handmade in the UK using recycled materials.  It is also designed to be reused and you can refill any of the base ingredients in your box by simply returning your empty glass bottles or canvas bags, they will be refilled and posted back to you.  Along with this dedicated service you also have access to the Wellbeing Resource Library where you can get regular updates with expert advice on seasonal living, self care, meditation, yoga, mindfulness, seasonal food, pamper and sleep.  Its good to know if you are finding anything a little stressful that help is just a click away.

If you do find self care difficult you can sign up to the weekly wellbeing toolkit that will guide you gently into integrating wellbeing into your everyday.  What is not to like about having that friendly hand to hold to bring a moments peace and happiness to counteract the busy.

As a thank you State of Liberty are offering my readers a 15% discount on the Winter Pamper Box using the code SOL-TEAWITHRUBY a perfect gift to yourself for the New Year don’t you think?

Escape to Croatia at Villa No24

What do you look for when booking a holiday?  I like staying in places that are unusual a bit different , somewhere I know nothing about.  I also like to find holiday homes that are in keeping with my style, that make me feel at home instantly.
Alas I am not going to Croatia this year but if I were Istria would be the place to go and my time would be spent at Villa No24.  Croatia is a place I have always wanted to visit and hopefully one day I will, it seems more untouched tourist wise a hidden gem especially Istria,  full of culture, historical architecture and breath taking scenery surrounded by olive groves and vineyards.
Villa No24 is stunning, the interior is naturally decorated, slubby neutral tones that I adore, a calm peaceful retreat to escape to, owned and renovated by Ita and Žac.  The couple both have fast paced careers and wanted to be able to find a way to combat their high paced lives with something that would be good for their well being.  Their plan for the future is to be able to move to Istria permanently and do what they enjoy the most, renting their haven of a property during the Summer months and in the Winter escape to warmer climbs for rest and relaxation.
Villa No24 is located in a small romantic village in the heart of Istria, set in the most tranquil and peaceful surroundings, the villa was built in 1921 an old stone dwelling that Ita and Žac renovated in 2017 to bring back the charm and elegance of the original building but added contemporary details to make it into a beautiful modern retreat.  It is spacious and open with 3 bedrooms each with their own bathroom, a kitchen inside and out for alfresco dining, a stylish lounge area to relax on an evening and the pièce de résistance the large pool for whiling away many hours basking in the sunshine or snoozing in the shade of the terrace’s canopy.
The rooms are individually decorated with original pieces of art made by Ita, her macramé pieces adorn the walls and light fittings creating a unique look in my favourite colour palettes.  Her macramé work is exceptional and I am the proud owner of one of her wall hangings.
I for one am now rather desperate to find a way to visit Villa No24 not only for the hospitality that Ita would provide but the peaceful beautiful interiors that I would get to stay in.   A simply serene get away in an undiscovered part of the world I would dearly like to visit.   Fingers crossed I will get to visit Croatia very soon.

The Perfect Night In

As Winter approaches I like nothing better than staying in, no plans made, nowhere to go and I couldn’t be happier.   Don’t get me wrong I do love getting glammed up every now and again, high heels on, glass of fizz in hand, creeping back in in the small hours. Then sometimes after a busy week you long to recharge, shut the laptop, turn off the phone and just savour those precious moments at home.

I don’t need to give you hints or tips as to how to do it, I think we all  have our favourite ways of unwinding and making the most of our down but these are a few of the things that I find irresistible to me.  When I get the chance to do more than one of these rituals together then I have succeeded in creating the perfect night in.

As the day draws in I like nothing better than to light many candles.  The warm glow creates the perfect atmosphere to start relaxing.  Light the fire, put the kettle on and curl up in your favourite chair with those books you’ve been meaning to read for a while and haven’t quite got around to yet.  I also like indulging  and losing myself in a good film, wrapped up in blankets on the sofa, movie night is another way to escape, to drift off into another world for a while you simply can’t beat it.

Whilst you are in no rush there is nothing nicer than to draw a warm scent filled bath, to soak away those knots, breathe deeper and slower while immersed in the warm water.   Fill the room with candle light, maybe enjoy a good glass of wine and stay there until your fingers get all wrinkly.

Something that my husband and I like to do is cook, through the week evening meals can be quick and rushed as we all do our daily tasks, homework to be completed, clubs to go to, meetings to attend.  On one of those rare evenings that it is just the two of us, there is nothing more satisfying than to make a meal together, taking our time preparing, laying a table, talking about the day, creating new plans without any time constraints.

Then my all time favourite of all favourites for a perfect night in is to get into bed ridiculously early.  Comfy and cosy, fresh bedlinen, books and magazines at the ready, blankets to snuggle up in and a warming cup of tea.  Truly it doesn’t get any better than the cocooning sanctuary that is the duvet.  To be able to fall asleep when relaxed and rested, enjoying a good nights sleep and to wake refreshed and renewed, there is nothing that can top that, not in my book.

Relax with Plum & Ashby

There’s nothing nicer than after a long day to run a bath filled with the scent of summer to sooth away those knotty thoughts in your mind and body. I adore having a soak in the tub a simple pleasure and recently made even better by Plum & Ashby and their contemporary bath & body range.

Not only does their range smell delicious but it comes in the most stylish packaging with a nod to old apothecary bottles.  Deep amber toned glass and screw topped clear vessels which when not in use will make your bathroom shelf evoke that of a stylish store.

The heady scent of lavender is one of my favourites especially at this time of year, I have lavender hedges that line my garden paths and doorways, when you brush past the air is filled with it’s aroma and I simply love it.  So of course I couldn’t resist the temptation of the Green Fig and Lavender hand and body wash and Lavender bath essence.

My new bathroom companion Green Fig and Lavender wash is being used daily, made with natural essential oils it cleanses and moisturises without over dying my skin, a mini pamper every day is good for ones soul.  For those bathing moments I described at the beginning of the post you really can’t surpass this wonderful moisturising bath essence.  With the calming lavender notes and soothing tones of marigold helping relaxation, pour a small amount to running water when drawing a bath and completely unwind. The essence is also made with all natural ingredients including coconut and lavender oil.  I find that taking a bath in the evening helps me sleep better too especially with these subtle scents that calm the senses.

Not only do Plum & Ashby provide you with the complete bathing experience they also supply super wash bags for you to store their products in too so you can take them on weekends away and holidays so you always have that little bit of luxury where ever you go.

I’m having a few days away with the girls this weekend and guess what will be coming with me in my over night bag!

Styling the Seasons ~ April

Well we are nearly at the end of April and the Spring sunshine has decided to grace us with it’s presence and it has been most appreciated.  My mood this month has been a bit on the low side and I can’t quite put my finger on it apart from the lack of sunlight, maybe that is it.  All is well now though, Ruby has had a few days away (for the first time) with school.  A most strange experience, the house was very quiet.  We missed her terribly but also felt like we did before she came along, no time schedules to run to and it was all rather nice but I am pleased that she’s home now, not so sure about the washing though!

We have finally started the redecoration plans for our kitchen, the new back door is being fitted as I type which is most exciting, be gone nasty brown plastic door, hello beautiful grey painted wooden stable door.  Next weekend (which is technically May) we will be getting the paint brushes out and transforming my room into a grey haven.  I chose Worsted in the end by Farrow & Ball it’s the most stunning warm shade.  My uber talented friend is going to whiz up a new Roman blind for me using the delicious slubby French sheet I told you about last week, oh my it’s all going to look superb.

Anyway I digress back to April, I have found myself spending more time in my favourite room this month for quiet time, my place to relax and reflect.  The light in our bedroom is perfect, the wall colour so calming and as it is on the ceiling too it cocoons you totally.  Our room is pared back with lots of layered linen which gives it a feminine edge.  I could sit on our bed all day indulging in reading interior books and magazines which I find a great source of inspiration.

I have to have flowers by the bed it just adds that extra touch and makes you smile when you first open your eyes on a morning.  These beautiful narcissus are so pale with a striking shot of peachy perfection I couldn’t resist.  As luck would have it the latest edition of the Country Living Modern Rustic arrived and the spine complimented the narcissus hues perfectly.

I may just have to treat myself for half an hour back up there after writing this with a cup of tea for a spot of me time with the bookazine to dream.  On that note a bit of relaxed excitement too, I will be joining Yawn (@yawnlondon) this Saturday to takeover their instagram account, I’ll be there all week sharing my ways to relax, unwind, slowing life down a little and genuinely enjoy lazing around in my pj’s, the bedroom will feature a lot, I wonder why!!

Happy Holidays

Once again the holidays are upon us, the big day has been and gone but the festivities continue in our house.   Precious time after the hustle and bustle of the last week to enjoy being still, curled up all warm and toasty with your favourite book and an odd glass or two of something nice and indulgent.
